Sagehens Take Out Cal Lutheran In SCIAC Semifinal

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 1 seeded Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team defeated the No. 4 seeded Cal Lutheran Regals 14-8 in the SCIAC Semifinals on Friday night at Haldeman Pool.
 
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 22-10 overall and earned a spot in the SCIAC Tournament Championship against CMS.
 
The Sagehens had five players with two goals in the win as Lulu Gaither, Mia Amberger, Namlhun Jachung, Brienz Lang, and Abigail Wiesenthal all had multi-goal games in the SCIAC Semifinal. Kaylee Stigar, Lauren Smith, Bella McGowan, and Paityn Richardson all had one goal as well.
 
Zosia Amberger got the start in the cage and picked up the win with one save. While Thea Pine came in at halftime and with seven saves.
 
The Sagehens got out to a slow start as the Regals kept the offense at bay for the first quarter. Pomona-Pitzer only had two goals in the first quarter from Jachung and Gaither to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the first eight minutes of play.
 
The Sagehens picked it up on offense in the second and outscored the Regals 7-1 in the second quarter. Lang scored the first two goals of the second while Stigar, Wiesenthal, and Gaither added goals as well to put the Sagehens up big at halftime, 9-2.
 
Pomona-Pitzer outscored Cal Lutheran 4-3 in the third but the Regals outscored the Sagehens in the second half 6-5. Richardson and Amberger got the lead up to 11-2 in the first minute of the second half. The Regals answered with a goal before Smith and Amberger scored to make it 13-3. Cal Lutheran ended the third with back-to-back goals and had a streak of five-straight goals to cut the lead down to 13-8 with a minute to play, but the Sagehens ended the night and the season for Cal Lutheran with a goal from McGowan to book another trip to the SCIAC Tournament Championship.
