Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Sagehens 3-Peat As SCIAC Tournament Champions

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team completed their SCIAC Tournament Championship 3-peat with an 11-10 win over No. 2 CMS on Sunday morning at Haldeman Pool.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens won their third consecutive SCIAC Tournament Championship and their 11th overall. The Sagehens improved to 23-10 in the process and extended their win streak to 15 games on the season.

The Sagehens were led by Lulu Gaither who had a game-high three goals in the win. Kaylee Stigar, Namlhun Jachung, and Mia Amberger had two goals each while Madison Lewis and Brienz Lang had one.  Zosia Amberger got the win in goal with seven saves and two steals.

A very even game between two bitter rivals in the D-III Water Polo world came down to the wire once again at Haldeman Pool. The Sagehens slightly outshot CMS 30-27 while CMS had the big advantage converting their powerplays with 4-8 for the Athenas while the Sagehens went just 3-10.

CMS had a big advantage early in the game as they came out hot on offense with the opening goal of the game. Gaither got her first goal in response, but the Athenas went up 4-1 in the first with three-straight goals to make it 4-1 with 3:14 left in the first.  The Sagehens did manage to end the quarter with a goal from Amberger, but still trailed 4-2. Gaither earned her second with the first goal of the second quarter and Stigar ended the first half with a goal as the defense did a good job keeping CMS off the scoreboard as the two teams went into halftime tied 4-4.

Lewis gave the Sagehens their first lead of the game to open the third quarter, but CMS answered with back-to-back goals to reclaim the lead at 6-5. Gaither completed her hat-trick and Amberger notched her second, but CMS and Grace Clark netted two straight of her own to give CMS an 8-7 lead heading into the fourth.

Jachung and Stigar opened the fourth quarter with two huge goals to give the Sagehens a 9-8 lead, but CMS kept responding to tie the game in the fourth.  Jachung netted a goal to take a 10-9 lead, but CMS answered right back with a goal to even the game at 10-10 with 2:03 to play.  The game-winning goal came off the hand of Lang who rifled a shot from the outside that was partially deflected and snuck past the keeper to give the Sagehens an 11-10 needing one stop to earn the championship.  CMS tried to get the ball inside, but Amberger came out for a game-clinching steal as the Sagehens hopped in the pool to celebrate their 11th SCIAC Tournament Championship.

Up Next: The Sagehens will now host the Division III Water Polo National Championships starting on Saturday, May 4th.
