CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team fell to CMS 8-4 in the opening game of the weekend series at Wig Beach Field. With the loss, the Sagehens are now 15-18 on the season and 7-9 in the conference. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow when they play CMS across the street at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
How It Happened
The Sagehens fell behind early after the Athenas managed to score on a fielder's choice ball and later an error, taking a 2-0 lead in the first. Pomona-Pitzer responded in the third inning with an RBI single down the left field line from
Lauren Ziment to cut the lead to 2-1.
CMS extended their lead in the fifth inning, using an RBI single, a two-RBI double, and a fielder's choice play to take a convincing 6-1 lead. The Athenas continued to attack in the sixth, using a two-run home run to make it 8-1.
In the sixth inning, the Sagehens battled back as
Bella Carreon started the inning with double to right center. After
Kylie Liu forced an error at second base, Carreon scored to make it 8-2.
Emily Hurtado later hit an RBI single to left to bring Liu home before
Claire Sefkow hit an RBI fly out to make it 8-4.
Despite the late rally, the Sagehens couldn't complete the comeback in the seventh inning as CMS held off the late push to take game one 8-4.
