Sagehens' Comeback Fails Short In Game One Loss To Chapman

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team fell in game one of their three-game series with SCIAC foe Chapman 9-8 on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 25-10 overall and 13-6 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Isaac Kim who went 3-5 with two RBI in the loss. JC Ng went 2-4 with three runs and an RBI while Nate Jakobs and Jack Gold also had two hits in the game while Greg Pierantoni and Tanner DeGrazia had one.

Jake Hilton got the start and a no-decision after six innings and five runs, three of them earned, and three strikeouts. Eamonn Woods went 1.2 innings with two runs given up and Eric Prough suffered the loss with 1.1 innings at the end of the game.

A couple of bad defensive plays early on in the game cost the Sagehens a few runs as Chapman struck first after getting the leadoff man aboard with an error and then another in the third to gift the Panthers their first two runs.

The Sagehens did a great job responding in the game as Ng hit his seventh home run of the season and then scored another run in the second off of a balk to take a 2-1 lead. After another error came around to score to tie the game at 2-2, Chapman hit a two-run shot to right field to take a 4-2 lead.

The Panthers went on to extend their lead in the fifth to 5-2, but the Sagehens came back with a two-run double from Kim to cut the lead down to just one at 5-4.

Chapman once again widened the gap with more runs in the seventh to take a three-run lead at 7-4 before the Sagehens and DeGrazia came back again with a huge three-run homer to tie the game at 7-7.

The Sagehens had a chance to get out of the ninth, but another costly defensive miscue allowed the go-ahead run to score to put Chapman up 8-7 heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Pomona-Pitzer got the winning run aboard in the bottom of the ninth but failed to extend the game as the Panthers escaped game one with a win at Alumni Field.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next travel to Chapman for the doubleheader on Saturday, April 27th at 11:00 a.m.
