DeGrazia's Walk-Off Single Gives Sagehens Season Series Over Cal Lutheran

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team took the season series over Cal Lutheran after a marathon doubleheader sweep with an 11-2 win and a 14-inning 9-8 walk-off victory on Saturday at Alumni Field.  

Season Impact: with the wins, the Sagehens improved to 25-9 overall and 13-5 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Tanner DeGrazia who went 3-4 from the plate with two RBI and a run scored while William Kinney, JC Ng, Jack Gold, and George Nahabedian also had multi-hit games with two each.  Greg Pierantoni, Nate Jakobs, and Issac Kim all notched a hit as well and Kim blasted a grand slam for his ninth home run of the season. 

Hannoh Seo got the start and picked up his sixth win after he went six innings, gave up two runs off five hits with six strikeouts. Eric Prough came in for the three-inning save and did not allow a run the rest of the way. 

The bats got going for the Sagehens in the bottom of the fourth as they jumped ahead with three runs in the inning. Gold singled home Jakobs to start the rally followed by an RBI double by DeGrazia and an RBI single from Nahabedian to play from in front in game one of the doubleheader. 
 
Cal Lutheran responded in the top of the sixth off of a double to left field to cut the lead down to 3-2, but the Sagehens struck back in a huge way as Kim cleared the bases with a grandslam in the bottom of the seventh to put Sagehens up 7-2. Pomona-Pitzer wasn't done in the inning as DeGrazia and Nahabedian came through with back-to-back RBI singles to push the lead to 9-2. 

The Sagehens went on to end their scoring in game one as Pierantoni drove home two more with a single up the middle to make it 11-2 as the Sagehens bounced back with a big win in game one of the doubleheader.

The Sagehens were led by DeGrazia who was the hero with a 3-7 with three RBI and had the walk-off base hit in the bottom of the 14th. Kim went 3-6 with three RBI as well while Jakobs tallied two hits and Kinney, Pierantoni, and Gold had one.

Cal Lutheran got runs early in the game with five runs in the first four innings. The Kingsmen started with a solo shot to center field in the third and then a three-run third inning off of four hits to take a 3-0 lead. The Kingsmen added one more off of a wild pitch and after a close play at the plate, Cal Lutheran was able to extend its lead to 4-0. 

The Kingsmen added their fifth in the top of the fourth with an RBI ground out before Pomona-Pitzer came back with two runs off of a single and an error off the bat of DeGrazia to cut the lead down to 5-2. 

Cal Lutheran responded in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI single to bring home the sixth run of the game for the Kingsmen to make it 6-2 and added another in the seventh inning to make it 7-2 before the Sagehens began to make their comeback.
 
A big seventh and eighth inning got the Sagehens back within striking distance as Kim started the rally with a two-RBI single and Pierantoni drove in another run to cut the deficit down to 7-5.
 
The Sagehens came all the way back to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth after Kinney singled home DeGrazia and Kim followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 7-7.
 
After a bullpen duel in extra-innings, Cal Lutheran struck first with a sacrifice fly to score the go-ahead run, but the Sagehens loaded the bases in the bottom of the 14th and DeGrazia came through with a two-RBI single through the left side to score Lateef Wakil and Pierantoni to walk-off the win and take the season series over Cal Lutheran.
