How It Happened
The Sagehens looked to have a dangerous opportunity in the opening at bat as
Devin Waddell singled to start the inning before
Summer Gibson walked to put runners on first and second.
Bella Carreon moved the duo over to second and third with a sacrifice bunt and
Kylie Liu walked to load the bases with just one out. Unfortunately, the Sagehens went down with a strikeout and line out to leave all three runners stranded in the first inning.
Devin Waddell pitched a quick bottom half of the first after forcing two groundouts and recording her first strikeout of the day.
The Sagehens struck first in the second inning, with
Morgan Groves earning a walk before
Lauren Ziment got hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second.
Devin Waddell was able to hit an RBI single to center to bring Groves home, giving Pomona-Pitzer the 1-0 lead. The Regals were quick to counter, using a two-run home run, an RBI triple, and RBI single to take a 4-1 lead in the second inning.
After a scoreless third inning, the Sagehens started their comeback as
Kylie Liu hit a two-RBI triple to right center to cut the Regals lead to 4-3.
Brooke Bullis kept things going for the Sagehens with a hard hit ground ball to short stop that resulted in an error and another Sagehen run, tying things at 4-4.
Claire Sefkow continued the attack, recording and RBI single to left to give Pomona-Pitzer a 5-4 lead.
Morgan Groves then hit an RBI double to right center, bringing one more across home plate in the fourth to increase the Sagehens lead to 6-4.
The Sagehens were able to add some insurance runs in the fifth inning with
Bella Carreon recording a two-RBI sacrifice fly to center before
Morgan Groves hit a three-RBI double to left center, putting the Sagehens on top 11-4. Cal Lutheran's comeback attempt fell short as they recorded a solo home run in the sixth before being shut down in order in the seventh as the Sagehens took the 11-5 victory.
