WHITTIER, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team traveled to Whittier today to resume their SCIAC series from last week, earning a 5-2 victory in game one of the day, and later defeating the Poets 10-3 to win the series.
Erika Rivera earned the win in game one after pitching 6.2 inning with five hits allowed and two runs on 92 pitches and 28 batters faced.
Nyla Springer picked up the save to hold off the Poets and secure the Sagehens game one victory.
Devin Waddell highlighted the Sagehens offense in game one of the day with four hits, including a home run.
Devin Waddell pitched a full seven innings in game two to secure the win, allowing six hits in the contest. The Sagehens will be on a spring break travel trip to the Pacific Northwest next week with games against George Fox, Willamette, and Lewis and Clarke.
Pomona-Pitzer 5, Whittier 2
After two scoreless innings, the Sagehens broke through in the third with a solo home run over the right center wall from
Devin Waddell, giving the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.
Erika Rivera made quick work of the Poets in the third, fourth, and fifth inning, facing 10 batters while holding Whittier hitless in that stretch. The Sagehens got back to work in the sixth inning with Waddell hitting a leadoff single up the middle before advancing to third after a bunt from
Bella Carreon. Carreon stole second and the duo scored after a two RBI double from
Brooke Bullis, giving the Sagehens a 3-0 lead. Pomona-Pitzer continued to attack, scoring their fourth running with an RBI single from
Erika Rivera before scoring their fifth after a Whittier error made it 5-0.
The Poets managed to respond in the bottom of the sixth inning, using two hits to score with an RBI single to cut the Sagehens lead to 5-1. Back-to-back fly outs ended the Poets attack to take the game to the seventh inning. The Sagehens earned hits from
Devin Waddell and
Kylie Liu in the top of the seventh inning but couldn't get across home plate, holding their lead at 5-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning.
Rivera quickly earned a strike out to start the bottom of the inning before the Poets lined out to Rivera for out number two. From there, the Poets regrouped and hit a single up the middle and scored with an RBI double to cut the Sagehens lead to 5-2.
Nyla Springer was brought in to close out the contest, walking the first batter she faced before forcing a ground out to third base as the Sagehens took the first game of the day 5-2.
Pomona-Pitzer 10, Whittier 3
The Sagehens had an electric start to the final game of the series, scoring six runs in the opening inning of the contest.
Devin Waddell started the game with a single and later moved to second after
Bella Carreon reached on an error. Brooke Bulls recorded an RBI single to bring in Waddell before
Kylie Liu hit an RBI double to center to make it 2-0. With Liu and Bulls on the bases,
Claire Sefkow stepped up and hit a three-RBI home run over the centerfield wall to make it 5-0. The Sagehens were able to add another run with another shot over the centerfield wall, this time off the bat of
Morgan Groves, increasing Pomona-Pitzer's lead to 6-0.
The Poets went down in order in the bottom of the first, sending the Sagehens back to the plate with momentum on their side. The bats stayed hot in the second inning with
Devin Waddell getting things started with her second home run of the day to increase the lead to 7-0. Later in the inning,
Kylie Liu hit an RBI single and
Claire Sefkow recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to give the Sagehens a convincing 9-0 lead over Whittier. Whittier was able to respond in the bottom of the second after a groundout RBI to make it 9-1 after two innings. Whittier added another run in the fourth to cut it to 9-2 with an RBI double to left center. In the sixth inning, Whittier continued to chip away at the Sagehens lead, using an RBI single to cut the Sagehens lead to 9-3.
Pomona-Pitzer recorded the last run of the game in the top of the seventh with
Bella Carreon hitting and RBI single for the insurance run and 10-3 lead that would turn into the final score after a double play and ground out shut down the Poets.
