CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team totaled 46 runs in their season sweep over SCIAC opponent Redlands with an 11-6 win in game two and a 20-12 win in game three on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the sweep, the Sagehens improve to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in SCIAC play.
Pomona-Pitzer 11, Redlands 6
The Sagehens were led by
Greg Pierantoni who went 2-4 in the win with five RBIs.
Nate Jakobs,
Kade Morihara, and
Tanner DeGrazia all had two hits while
William Kinney,
JC Ng Isaac Kim,
Cooper Berry, and
Matthew Nishimura had one each.
Hannoh Seo got the start in game one and went five innings giving up two runs off eight hits with six strikeouts for the no-decision.
Harry Deliyannis was first out of the pen for the Sagehens and steadied the ship with two innings of shutout relief work while
Eric Prough picked up the win.
The Sagehens got in a little trouble in the first inning as the Bulldogs loaded the bases in their first at-bats and came away with two runs off an RBI single to take a quick 2-0 lead.
The Sagehen bats were quiet in the early stages of the doubleheader but finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Kinney came through with an RBI single, but Pomona-Pitzer couldn't capitalize more after loading the bases as they still trailed 2-1 through five innings of play.
The Sagehens got to the Redlands' bullpen and came through with a huge bottom of the eighth as they plated 10 runs to take the lead. Pierantoni stepped up with a huge two-run shot to center field to take a 3-2 lead and Berry followed with an RBI double to extend the lead to 4-2. The Sagehens weren't done yet as Nishimura blooped in an RBI single to score Berry, Gold walked in a run with the bases loaded and Pierantoni cleared the bases to give himself five RBIs in the inning. Jakobs capped off the huge eighth inning with a two-run shot to right field as the Sagehens took an 11-2 lead to take game one of the doubleheader and guaranteed them a series win over the Bulldogs.
Pomona-Pitzer 20, Redlands 12
The Sagehens were led by Kim who went a perfect 4-4 at the plate with four RBIs and a run scored while Pierantoni went 4-6, Jakobs tallied three hits, while Kinney and Ng also had a multi-hit game with two.
Ethan Collins got the ball for game two and picked up the win with five innings pitched before he was relieved for
Wade Lawson and
Jack Wiessinger.
The Bulldogs jumped ahead again in inning one with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead over the Sagehens to force Pomona-Pitzer to play from behind.
The Sagehens immediately answered with an RBI double from Kim to even the score at 1-1 heading into the second inning.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped ahead in the bottom of the second after another massive inning on offense. The Sagehens had a 10-run inning in game one of the doubleheader and then came back with an incredible 13-run inning to blow the game wide open.
Ng started the run parade with a bases-loaded double followed by Kinney who scored off of a wild pitch to take a 4-1 lead. Kim came through with an RBI single before the Sagehens hit three home runs by Gold, Jakobs, and DeGrazia to extend the lead to 10-1. The Sagehens were done just yet as Kinney doubled in a run and then back-to-back walks with the bases loaded made it 13-1 and the runs finally stopped after Pierantoni drove in the 13th run of the inning on a ground out to take a 14-1 lead over Redlands.
The Sagehens didn't stop scoring there as they continued to light up the board against Redlands. Nishimura doubled to bring in two more, while RBIs from Kim, Gold, and Jakobs put the Sagehens up 19-1.
Although the game was well in hand for the Sagehens, Redlands put together some good innings on offense with back-to-back innings with a three-run homer and an RBI single as well to cut the large lead down to 19-8.
Redlands trying to prevent the run rule, came back with three more runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead down under 10 runs at 19-11 and added another in the top of the seventh to make it four-straight innings with a score to make it 19-12.
With no lights at Alumni Field, the game ended after seven innings due to darkness with the Sagehens completing the sweep over Redlands for their fifth SCIAC win of the season.
