CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team split with the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets on Friday afternoon, dropping game one 4-1 and later winning a five inning 9-1 victory in game two. Pomona-Pitzer recorded 15 hits in game two with
Claire Sefkow leading the team, going three for three at the plate with seven Sagehens recording an RBI.
Madison Hadley earned her first career win in game two, pitching five innings with eight hits and one run allowed while facing 25 batters. The Sagehens will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Whittier College for a doubleheader, starting at 12:00 p.m. to resume their SCIAC series.
Pomona-Pitzer 1, Baldwin Wallace 4
The Sagehens dropped game one 4-1 against the Yellow Jackets after a grand slam put up all four runs for Baldwin Wallace.
Natalie Murguia made the initial grab on the play in center field, momentarily robbing the Yellow Jackets of the home run but as Murguia collided with the outfield fence, the ball popped out of her glove and over the fence to give the Yellow Jackets a 4-0 lead. The Sagehens tried to mount the comeback later in the game with
Brooke Bullis recording an RBI single to cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 4-1. The comeback fell short as the Sagehens couldn't score anymore runs, giving Baldwin Wallace the 4-1 win in game one.
Pomona-Pitzer 9, Baldwin Wallace 1
The Sagehens got off to a better start in game two after stranding three Yellow Jackets runners in the top of the first inning before scoring the first run of the game in the bottom of the first with Bullis hitting another RBI single to score
Devin Waddell. Baldwin Wallace quickly found the equalizer in the top of the second with an RBI single down the right field line, tying the game at 1-1. The Sagehens responded immediately as
Natalie Murguia and
Claire Sefkow both recorded singles to start the bottom of the second inning with Murguia advancing to third on Sefkow's single.
Claire Sefkow stole second on the next play with Murguia scoring on the throw to make it 2-1. The Sagehens continued to attack with
Lauren Ziment hitting a single to left before
Victoria Hadley laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third.
Devin Waddell came up to plate and delivered, using an RBI single to center to bring in Sefkow and make it 3-1 while advancing to second on the play. The Sagehens later increased their lead to 4-1 in the second inning after
Kylie Liu earned an RBI walk with bases loaded to bring in
Lauren Ziment before the Yellow Jackets recorded the final out of the inning.
Baldwin Wallace attempted to respond in the third inning after loading the bases but the Sagehens defense forced two outs at the plate before
Madison Hadley forced a fly out to strand three runners and keep Baldwin Wallace off the board. The Sagehens got right back to work in the bottom of the third with
Lauren Ziment using an RBI single to bring in
Claire Sefkow while
Bella Carreon hit an RBI single through the left side to bring
Victoria Hadley home, giving Pomona-Pitzer a strong 6-1 lead.
After a quick three and out from the Yellow Jackets in the fourth inning, the Sagehens continued to attack in the bottom of the fourth.
Emily Hurtado started the inning with a double to left center and later scored, thanks to an RBI single from
Claire Sefkow to put the Sagehens on top 7-1.
The Yellow Jackets recorded one hit in the fifth, sending the Sagehens back to the plate with an opportunity to end the game early. After two line outs and a walk,
Kylie Liu doubled down the right field line to move
Bella Carreon over to third. Liu advanced to third on a wild pitch with Carreon scoring to make it 8-1 with two outs.
Emily Hurtado stepped up to the plate and delivered the walk off RBI single to left field to run-rule the Yellow Jackets 9-1 in five innings.
