CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team came away with a huge road win in the Sixth Street Rivalry with a 12-9 overtime win over CMS on Wednesday night at Axelrood Pool.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 6-9 overall and 1-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Kaylee Stigar who netted a hat-trick in the win.
Abigail Wiesenthal,
Brienz Lang, and
Lulu Gaither had multi-goal games with two each while
Ayva Magna,
Namlhun Jachung, and
Lauren Smith had one.
Zosia Amberger got the win in goal for the Sagehens after she came away with 12 saves.
Pomona-Pitzer and CMS were identical throughout the score lines of each quarter in regulation with both teams netting three goals in the opening quarter. The Sagehens took an early lead as Jachung scored the opening goal before CMS answered on the following possession to make it 1-1 in the opening minute. Gaither gave the Sagehens a 2-1 lead but CMS netted back-to-back goals to take their first lead of the game at 3-2 before Gaither scored her second goal of the quarter with five seconds left on the clock as the two teams ended the first tied at 3-3.
Both teams only scored one goal in the second quarter as Stigar scored her first of the game to make it 4-4 heading into halftime and Stigar then opened the third with a goal to make it 5-4 until CMS responded again to even the score at 5-5 with 5:10 left in the third.
Pomona-Pitzer netted back-to-back goals to take their largest lead in regulation with a 7-5 lead after Magna and Smith scored, but CMS answered back again with two-straight goals to close the third tied at 7-7.
The Athenas took an early lead in the fourth to force the Sagehens to come back into the game down 9-7. Lang and Wiesenthal answered the call for the Sagehens with back-to-back goals to even the score at 9-9 with 2:10 to play. After a big stop on defense, the Sagehens had a late powerplay to try to win the game in the closing seconds of the fourth, but CMS fought off the attack and sent the game into overtime.
The Sagehens took over the game in overtime as Wiesenthal opened the scoring to make it three-straight goals by the Sagehens while Lang added another to make it 11-9 after the first overtime period ended. CMS had no answer on offense in overtime as the Sagehens continued to add to their overtime lead with Stigar earning her Sixth Street hat-trick to make it 12-9 as the Sagehens took the road win over CMS.
