CLAREMONT, Ca. – The No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer lacrosse team improved to 6-0 on the season with an 11-7 victory over (RV) Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Tuesday night with
Fiona Lewis and
Chloe Denhart both recording a hat trick in the win. Lewis also picked up five ground balls for the Sagehens while
Carly Sullivan had three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Caroline Welch also had a strong defensive night with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Ruby Loesch ended the night with seven saves overall in the victory. Pomona-Pitzer gets a short break as they will be back in action tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. when they host the Redlands Bulldogs to resume SCIAC play.
How It Happened
The Sagehens faced early pressure as the Engineers won the opening draw control before scoring the first goal of the contest just 34 seconds after the whistle.
River Buechner was able to get the offense started for the Sagehens, tying the match at 1-1 with a goal with 12:16 on the clock. From there the Sagehens settled into the offense attack with
Chloe Denhart and
Fiona Lewis both finding the back of the net to give Pomona-Pitzer a 4-1 lead to end the first quarter.
Sydney Landauer scored the only goal of the second quarter with 6:11 left on the clock, putting the Sagehens up 5-1 at the halftime break.
The Engineers put the pressure on once again, scoring back to back goals out of the halftime break to cut the Sagehens lead to 5-3.
Hannah Gough responded for the Sagehens with a goal of her own to end the run and make it 6-3 but RPI answered once more, scoring to cut the lead back to two goals at 6-4. The Sagehens ended the third quarter on a 4-0 run with two goals from Denhart to complete the hat trick along with goals from
Grace Tighe and
Sydney Landauer to put the Sagehens on top 10-4.
Fiona Lewis earned her hat trick just under two minutes into the fourth with her third goal of the day, extending Pomona-Pitzer's lead to 11-4. RPI was able to score the last three goals of the contest, cutting the Sagehens lead to 11-7 but time would expire as Pomona-Pitzer earned the victory on Tuesday night.
