CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team earned a 4-3 walk off victory in game one of the doubleheader against Oberlin College on Friday afternoon. The game one victory relied on late game heroics as the Sagehens scored two runs in the seventh inning to secure the victory with
Claire Sefkow earning the game winning RBI single to left field. In game one, the Sagehens recorded 10 hits with two triples from
Devin Waddell with
Kylie Liu and
Morgan Groves both ending the game with two hits.
Pomona-Pitzer 4, Oberlin 3
The Sagehens fell behind early as Oberlin put two across home plate in the first inning, using a two-RBI double to left field to take the 2-0 lead. The Sagehens nearly countered in the bottom of the first after
Devin Waddell started the inning with a triple to left field. A fielder's choice play resulted in Waddell getting thrown out at the plate with the Sagehens leaving three runners stranded in the inning to keep Oberlin up 2-0.
Both teams went scoreless through the second inning, but the Sagehens scored once in the third and again in the fourth. The Sagehens first run of the day came in the third with
Devin Waddell hitting her second triple of the day, this time to right field. Waddell later scored after a sacrifice bunt from
Bella Carreon, cutting Oberlin's lead to 3-1 after three innings. In the fourth inning,
Kylie Liu hit an RBI single to right field to bring in the equalizer for the Sagehens, making it 2-2 after four innings.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Oberlin started the sixth inning with a solo home run to regain the lead at 3-2. Pomona-Pitzer started the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to center field from
Marie Milton, but she was left stranded as the Sagehens couldn't get the bats going to score the tying run.
Oberlin tried to add insurance in the seventh, starting the inning with a single but a double play from
Claire Sefkow and
Bella Carreon followed by a fly out to
Lauren Ziment ended Oberlin's half of the inning, sending the Sagehens back to the plate trailing 3-2.
The Sagehens got things started with a single to third base from
Morgan Groves. Groves advanced to second after a high bouncing ground out from
Brooke Bullis. The Sagehens recorded a line out to short stop, putting the pressure on with two outs and Groves standing on second.
Sophia Roberts came in to pinch hit and earned a walk, putting runners on first and second. An RBI single from
Emily Hurtado scored Groves from second, tying the game at 3-3 with the winning run standing on second.
Claire Sefkow came up to bat and delivered the walk off RBI single, hitting a hard ground ball into left field with Roberts scoring on the play to give the Sagehens the walk off 4-3 victory in game one of the doubleheader.
Pomona-Pitzer 5, Oberlin 0
Oberlin and Pomona-Pitzer both went scoreless through the first two innings of game two with the Sagehens leaving four runners stranded in that stretch with Oberlin leaving two on base in the first.
The Sagehens got things going in the third inning with
Kylie Liu starting the inning with a single to left before
Bella Carreon hit a double to left, moving Liu to third.
Morgan Groves brought Liu home with an RBI fly out to left field to make it 1-0.
Emily Hurtado later hit an RBI single to centerfield to make it 2-0.
Devin Waddell forced three-straight groundouts in the fourth inning, sending the Sagehens back on the attack.
Lauren Ziment reached first on an error and was later brought home after a two-RBI home run from
Devin Waddell increased the Sagehens lead to 4-0. Pomona-Pitzer added another run in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI double to left field from
Marie Milton, putting the Sagehens up 5-0.
The five runs would be all the Sagehens needed as
Devin Waddell and Pomona-Pitzer's defense shut down Oberlin in the sixth and seventh to earn the two game sweep over Oberlin with a 5-0 victory in game two.
