CLAREMONT, Ca. – The No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the 2024 season at the hands of the No. 13 Williams College Ephs on Wednesday night. The Ephs defeated the Sagehens 13-6 in a battle of two top-15 foes with Pomona-Pitzer dropping just their second home contest in 33 matches, dating back to the 2022 season. The Sagehens are now 9-1 on the season and will resume SCIAC play for their next contest when they travel to Redlands on Apr. 3 at 7:00 p.m.
How It Happened
The Ephs of Williams College won the opening draw control of the contest but after
Hannah Gough caused a turnover a minute later,
Sydney Landauer found
Fiona Lewis open in front of the goal with Lewis taking the pass and firing it past the Ephs keeper for an early 1-0 lead. With 10:10 to play in the opening quarter, Williams found their equalizer before taking a 2-1 lead nearly two minutes later.
Fiona Lewis found the net again, this time with the assist coming from
Shoshi Henderson as the Sagehens tied things at 2-2 with 7:48 to play in the first quarter. The Ephs were able to tack on three more goals while forcing the Sagehens two commit two turnovers while taking just one more shot in the quarter, sending the Ephs to the second quarter with a 5-2 lead.
Williams won the draw control to start the post and later rang a shot off the post, but
Taylor Glanville was the first to break the ice in the second with a goal two minutes into the quarter, cutting the Ephs lead to 5-3. Williams managed to counter with two more goals to take a 7-3 lead, but the Sagehens got a goal from
Hannah Gough to pull within three goals again with 9:27 remaining in the second quarter. Both teams struck the back of the net once more in the half with the Sagehens scoring off the stick of
River Buechner to cut the Ephs lead to 8-5 with just over a minute left in the half. The Ephs won the draw control after Buechner's goal and had two dangerous shot attempts, but
Ruby Loesch made two great saves to keep the score at 8-5 in favor of the Ephs heading into the halftime break.
The third quarter was a defensive battle as the Sagehens were held scoreless with the Ephs netting two goals to increase their lead to 10-5 entering the fourth quarter. The Sagehens struck first in the fourth with a goal from
Taylor Glanville with 10:52 on the clock, cutting the Williams lead to 10-6. The Ephs scored three unanswered goals to take a 13-6 lead and held off the Sagehens to seal the 13-6 road victory.
