Sagehens Take Down Brown For Second Time In 2024 Season

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team defeated Brown 11-10 on Sunday afternoon at Haldeman Pool.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 13-10 overall.

The Sagehens were led by the duo of Brienz Lang and Lulu Gaither who each netted a hat-trick in the win. Abigail Wiesenthal netted two goals while Kaylee Stigar, Lisbon Zeigler, and Paityn Richardson had one. Zosia Amberger got the start in the cage and picked up the win with nine saves and five steals.

A close matchup between the two teams for the second time this season as the Sagehens won the previous game this season against Brown, 13-12.

Lang got the Sagehens out to a lead with the first goal of the game before the Bears connected for three-straight goals to go up 3-1. Zeigler closed the gap back down to one with a goal in the final five seconds to make it 3-2 Brown after one quarter of play.

Brown opened the second quarter with two goals to take a 5-2 lead, but the Sagehens closed the first half out strong with the final three goals for the second quarter from Lang, Gaither and Wiesenthal to tie the game at 5-5 heading into halftime.

The bears and Sagehens went back-and-forth to start the third as Stigar, Lang, and Gaither netted goals, but the Bears still held a slight 9-8 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Pomona-Pitzer tied the game with the opening goal of the fourth from Wiesenthal, and after a goal from Brown, Richardson tied the game at 10-10 with just under three minutes to play.

Both teams had their chances to score the go-ahead goal late in the game, but it was the Sagehens and Gaither who netted the late goal to put Pomona-Pitzer up 11-10 with 20 seconds to go.  Brown got a good look at the end of the game, but a big save from Amberger as time expired sealed the win for the Sagehens for the second time this season against Brown.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next play their road contest against La Verne on Wednesday, March 27th at Axelrood Pool on the campus of Claremont McKenna.
