CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team continued their unbeaten SCIAC streak with a 17-3 win over Cal Lutheran on Saturday morning at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 12-10 overall and 5-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Mia Amberger and
Brienz Lang who each netted a hat-trick with three goals in the win.
Abigail Wiesenthal,
Lauren Smith, and
Lulu Gaither had two goals while
Kaylee Stigar,
Ayva Magna,
Madison Lewis,
Bella McGowan, and
Paityn Richardson had one.
Zosia Amberger got the start in the cage and picked up the win with one gave while
Thea Pine also saw time in goal with seven saves.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a good lead in the first quarter with the first four goals of the game. Wiesenthal put the Sagehens up early and then Lang, Gaither, and Magna added goals before The Regals scored to make it 4-1. Amberger ended the first with a goal for the Sagehens as well to put Pomona-Pitzer on top 5-1 heading into the second.
Lang and Gaither got the lead up to 7-1 with the first two goals of the second quarter before the Regals got their second of the day to make the score 7-2 with 6:05 to play. Both teams struggled to add goals late in the first half, but a goal from
Madison Lewis ended the first half with the Sagehens up big at 8-2.
The defense turned up in the third quarter for the Sagehens and held the Regals scoreless while the Sagehen offense added five more goals to their total. Amberger and Smith got the Sagehens up 11-2 while McGowan and Richardson ended the third with goals to extend the lead to 13-2 heading into the final quarter of play.
With the game well in hand, Pomona-Pitzer continued to score outscoring Cal Lutheran 4-1 in the final quarter. Lang completed her hat trick with the opening goal of the fourth while Stigar Wiesenthal and Smith ended a high-scoring game for the Sagehens as they stayed perfect in SCIAC play this season.
