No. 3 Sagehens Earn 7-2 Win Over No. 16 Amherst

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team continued their impressive streak against Division III opponents with a 7-2 win over No. 16 Amherst on Friday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
 
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improved to 10-3 overall.
 
Pomona-Pitzer actually started out behind on the scoreboard after doubles with Amherst taking two of the three doubles matches to start the day.  The No.1 Sagehens' team of Lauren Rha and Nina Ye breezed through their match with a clean 8-0 win. The Mammoths got their only two points of the day at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches as Nyakiriri Kanefu and Marissa Markey fell in a tiebreaker 8-7 while Angie Zhou and Alex Coleman fell 8-5 at the No. 3 spot.
 
The Sagehens went on to win all six singles matches against Amherst. Starting the wins was Kanefu with a quick 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 2 position followed by a 6-1, 6-4 win by Leticia Bazua Vazquez at the No. 3 spot.
 
Zhou started off her singles with a 6-3 loss in set one but rallied back hard with back-to-back 6-1 wins in sets two and three to put the Sagehens up 4-2 needing one point to clinch.
 
For the second-straight match, Ye clinched for the Sagehens with her 6-3, 7-6 win at the No. 6 spot to secure a win over another ranked opponent for Pomona-Pitzer.
 
The Sagehens did go on to win their remaining matches as Markey took a three-set win by the scores of 7-5, 6-7, 10-2 and Amelia Poor came back after dropping the first set 2-6 with a 6-3, 7-5 win to end the day for the Sagehens.
