CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team came away with a big 6-3 win over No. 4 Middlebury on Wednesday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improved to 9-3 overall.
Pomona-Pitzer fell behind to start the match with Middlebury taking two of the three doubles matches.
Nina Ye and
Lauren Rha fell 8-5 at the No. 1 position while
Marissa Markey and
Nyakiriri Kanefu dropped their match at No. 2 doubles, 8-3. The Sagehens managed to get one point on the board at the No. 3 doubles as
Alex Coleman and
Angie Zhou came away with an 8-3 win to make it 2-1 in favor of Middlebury heading into singles.
The Sagehens did damage during the singles matches with five of the six matches ending in wins.
Amelia Poor got the Sagehens even with a quick 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles followed by Rha at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-3 win to get the Sagehens up 3-2.
Leticia Bazua Vazquez won in straight sets after being down 5-0 in set one, rallied for a 7-6 win, and took set two 6-4 to put the Sagehens one point away from the clinch.
The Sagehens took the win at No. 5 singles as Ye swept set one 6-0 and fell in set two 7-5. Ye rallied back in set three and came through with the 6-4 win to clinch the match for Pomona-Pitzer.
Ending the day was Zhou at the No. 1 spot who also went into three sets and came away with a 7-6, 1-6, 6-1 victory to hold off the No. 4 ranked Panthers at home.
