SALEM, OR. – The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens went toe to toe for 15 innings with the Willamette Bearcats on Friday afternoon, winning the marathon match 13-12 with 14 hits in the contest with
Devin Waddell earning the victory, pitching 13 innings to secure the Sagehens fifth-straight victory. The Sagehens fell 5-3 in game two in a six inning contest that was called short due to darkness. Pomona-Pitzer earned eight hits in the game with
Erika Rivera pitching five innings, allowing six hits.
Pomona-Pitzer 13, Willamette 12
The Sagehens and Bearcats both recorded a hit in the first inning but both teams left the runner stranded to send the game to the second inning. Pomona-Pitzer was lethal in the second inning, using seven hits to score seven runs. A groundout to the short stop started the inning but the Sagehens loaded the bases with a single from
Morgan Groves, a single from
Emily Hurtado, and a single from
Nyla Springer. A line out to the second basemen put two outs on the board but the Sagehens didn't care as the two out rally followed.
Devin Waddell got the scoring started with a two-RBI double to left to bring in Hurtado and Groves before a three-RBI double down the left field line from
Brooke Bullis cleared the bases to put the Sagehens up 5-0. The Sagehens continued to score as
Kylie Liu recorded an RBI double to left center with
Lauren Ziment bringing Liu home with an RBI double to center, giving the Sagehens a 7-0 lead early in game one against the Bearcats.
Willamette countered in the bottom of the second, benefiting from two Sagehen errors to score four runs and cut the Sagehens lead to 7-4. The Bearcats continued to close the gap, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third with a two-RBI home run to cut the Sagehens lead to 7-6. The story continued as both teams went scoreless through the sixth inning. The Bearcats scored in their final opportunity with one run coming in the bottom of the seventh inning with an RBI groundout to tie the contest at 7-7, sending the game to extra innings.
The Sagehens and Bearcats were quiet through the eighth and ninth inning but the Sagehens finally managed to break the tie in the 10th inning.
Emily Hurtado hit an RBI single through the left side to bring in
Kylie Liu, giving the Sagehens an 8-7 lead heading into the bottom of the 10th inning. With the international tie breaker rule in effect, the Bearcats started the inning with a runner on second who later moved to third on a wild pitch. A walk put runners on first and third and a hit by pitch later loaded the bases for the Bearcats. After a Bearcats line out put two outs on the board with bases loaded, another hit by pitch scored the tying run to make it 8-8 with bases loaded. Fortunately for the Sagehens, a fly out down the left field line ended the inning, sending the contest to the 11th inning with the score even at 8-8.
Pomona-Pitzer quickly moved
Victoria Hadley over from second to third with a sacrifice bunt from
Devin Waddell to start the inning.
Bella Carreon was hit by the next pitch, putting runners on first and third with one out but a fly out from
Brooke Bullis put two outs on the board, bringing
Kylie Liu to the plate. After a long at bat, the Sagehens headed to the bottom of the 11th inning after Liu went down swinging, leaving two runners stranded with the game tied 8-8. The Bearcats laid down the successful sacrifice bunt to start the bottom of the 11th but went down in order with a fly out to second base and a ground out, keeping the game gridlocked at 8-8 heading into the 12th inning.
The Sagehens failed to get the sacrifice bunt down to start the 12th inning but
Morgan Groves delivered the single to left field to move
Kylie Liu to third, putting runners on first and third with one out.
Emily Hurtado drilled a hard ground ball to short stop, resulting in an RBI groundout to make it 9-8 with Groves advancing to second base on the play. The Sagehens went down with a strikeout to end the inning but regained the lead at 9-8 to put the pressure on the Bearcats heading into the bottom of the 12th.
Willamette fought back to tie the game at 9-9 after a sacrifice bunt followed by an RBI single to right field. The Bearcats still had the advantage, sitting with runners on second and third, looking to end the marathon match. A groundout to third base put two outs on the board but a hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Bearcats on the next at bat. With a dangerous opportunity for Willamette,
Devin Waddell forced a pop fly to the short stop to end the inning tied 9-9 with the Sagehens and Bearcats moving into the 13th inning.
The Sagehens started the 13th inning with a bunt single to third base from
Victoria Hadley to move
Shelby Hawkes to third. Back-to-back groundouts to third base quickly put up two outs on the Sagehens before a line out to left center stranded both runners, sending the Bearcats back on the attack in the bottom of the 13th inning. The Bearcats quickly found themselves in a two-out situation after a sacrifice bunt followed by a groundout to
Devin Waddell. Waddell made another play in the infield, catching a pop up to keep things knotted at 9-9, sending the Sagehens and Bearcats to the 14th inning.
Pomona-Pitzer finally got the bats going in the 14th inning after
Lauren Ziment ripped an RBI single up the middle that rolled straight past the center fielder, allowing
Brooke Bullis to score with Ziment making her way all the way to third base. With a 10-9 lead,
Morgan Groves stepped up to bat and delivered a two-run bomb over the center field wall to give the Sagehens a 12-9 lead over the Bearcats heading into the bottom of the 14th inning.
Willamette stepped up to the challenge in the bottom of the 14th, starting the inning with a single through the left side, putting runners on first and third. An RBI single to left field scored a runner for the Bearcats, cutting the Sagehens lead to 12-10. The Bearcats loaded the bases after a hit by pitch and later scored on an RBI single to right field to cut the lead to 12-11. The Bearcats nearly found the equalizer on a throw that got past
Kylie Liu from right field on the play but the Bearcats hesitated and stayed at third. A pop fly gave the Sagehens their first out in the inning but a dropped pop fly to third base resulted in the tying run for the Bearcats, making it 12-12. The Sagehens were able to tag third base for the second out on the missed pop fly before getting a ground out to first base to end the inning and send things to the 15th inning.
The Sagehens successfully laid down the sacrifice bunt to start the 15th inning before
Devin Waddell was hit by the pitch, putting runners on first and third.
Bella Carreon put the Sagehens back on top with an RBI single that dropped into right field, giving Pomona-Pitzer the 13-12 lead heading into the bottom of the 15th inning.
Like previous innings, Willamette started the bottom of the 15th with a sacrifice bunt to move their runner over to third base. A hit by pitch put runners on first and third for the Bearcats with one out but a ground out to third base put two outs on the board with the Sagehens needed just one more out to win the marathon battle with the Willamette Bearcats.
Devin Waddell delivered the final blow, earning a strikeout to cap off the 15 inning, 13-12 victory over the Willamette Bearcats in game one of their doubleheader.

The Sagehens got right to work in game two as
Morgan Groves recorded an RBI double down the right field line, scoring two on the play after a throwing error, giving the Sagehens a 2-0 lead. Groves later scored after an RBI double from
Kylie Liu to left center, putting the Sagehens up 3-0 after the first inning. Willamette was quick to respond, using a two-RBI single to cut the Sagehens lead to 3-2 in the second inning. The Bearcats continued to charge, using a three-run home run to take a 5-3 lead over the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer and the Bearcats went scoreless for the remainder of the game with the contest ending after six innings due to darkness. The Sagehens recorded two hits in the fourth but left both runners stranded. The Sagehens had one more opportunity in the top of the sixth with a single from
Shelby Hawkes and a walk from
Natalie Murguia but both runners were left stranded, giving the Bearcats the six inning 5-3 victory.
