CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team fell short against No. 14 Princeton 14-9 on Wednesday morning at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 8-10 overall.
The Sagehens were led by
Lisbon Zeigler,
Lauren Smith, and
Lulu Gaither who each netted two goals in the win while
Abigail Wiesenthal,
Madison Lewis, and
Namlhun Jachung had one.
The Sagehens played a tight game against the No. 14 ranked Tigers at home but struggled to capitalize on key chances throughout the game. The Sagehens were 1-10 on their powerplay chances and shot .31 percent from the field.
Princeton had a strong opening quarter with five goals while the Sagehens stayed in the game with three of their own. The Tigers opened the first quarter with a goal followed by an answer from Wiesenthal in front of the cage to make it 1-1. The Tigers scored again with a response from Smith to make it 2-2 before Princeton netted back-to-back goals to take a 4-2 lead. The Sagehens came back with one more from Jachung to make it a one-goal game, but the Tigers ended the first quarter with a goal to take a 5-2 lead into the second.
Princeton started to pull away with the first three goals of the second quarter to take an 8-3 lead while Gaither found the back of the net for the only goal in the quarter for the Sagehens as Princeton took a 9-4 lead into halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer came out of halftime with a monster third quarter after they put up five goals to try to climb back into the game. Gaither opened the scoring for the Sagehens in the third and after the Tigers took an 11-5 lead, Smith, Zeigler, and Lewis netted goals to cut the lead down to 13-9 heading into the fourth.
The Sagehen defense held Princeton to just one goal in the fourth quarter, but the offense struggled to find the back of the net as they were shut out in the fourth as Princeton escaped Pomona-Pitzer with the win.
