Sagehens Comeback Falls Short in 8-5 Loss to Whittier

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team fell to Whittier 8-5 on Wig Beach Field after a back and forth battle with a late comeback attempt from the Sagehens. Bella Carreon highlighted the Sagehens efforts in the contest with a two run home run. The Sagehens will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Whittier for a doubleheader with the Poets at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
 
How It Happened
Both teams went scoreless through two innings with Devin Waddell pitching out of a dangerous first inning for the Poets. With bases loaded in the first, the Bella Carreon and Kylie Liu turned a double play, keeping the Poets off the board with the first out at home. The Sagehens got their third out of the inning with a leaping grab from Brooke Bullis to keep Whittier off the board.
 
After a scoreless second inning, the Sagehens got to work in the bottom of the third aftrer a leadoff double from Morgan Groves. Lauren Ziment followed Groves with a single through the left side with Groves advancing to third on the play. Groves was able to steal home after Ziment was nearly thrown out in a rundown, but the Poets failed to get either running, resulting in the first run for the Sagehens to make it 1-0. Later in the inning, Bella Carreon drilled a two-RBI home run over the center field wall to put the Sagehens on top 3-0. 
 
The Poets responded in the fifth inning, scoring two runs on a fielder's choice ball to cut the lead to 3-2. Whittier found the equalizer after foul out scored a run to make it 3-3. The Poets were able to add on one more run to take a 4-3 lead after an RBI single to center field. 
 
Whittier continued to increase their lead in the sixth inning, scoring three runs off three separate RBI singles to make it 7-3. The Sagehens answered in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runs to cut the Poets lead to 7-5, scoring off a wild pitch and a fly out to left field. The Poets were able to tack on one more run in the seventh inning before taking down the Sagehens to win the game 8-5.
