PROVIDENCE, RI. – The No. 25 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team dropped the final two games of the Bruno Classic with a 16-6 loss to No. 16 Indiana and a 14-11 loss to No. 20 Wagner on Sunday morning.
Season Impact: With the losses, the Sagehens fall to 3-3 overall to start the season.
Pomona-Pitzer 6, Indiana 16
The Sagehens were led by
Namlhun Jachung who netted a hat-trick with three goals in the loss.
Kaylee Stigar had two while
Lauren Smith added one.
Indiana took control of the game early in the first quarter outscoring the Sagehens 6-2. The Hoosiers netted the first two goals of the game before Jachung and Stigar scored for the Sagehens, but the Hoosiers went on to score five consecutive goals to take an 8-2 lead into halftime.
The Sagehens matched Indiana with goals in the third quarter with both teams scoring three. Stigar and Jachung both doubled up on their goal totals while Smith netted her first of the day but the Sagehens still faced a sizeable deficit at 11-5 heading into the fourth.
The Sagehens managed to get one more goal in the fourth as Jachung completed her hat-trick but ultimately fell to Indiana for their first loss of the Bruno Classic.
Pomona-Pitzer 11, Wagner 14
The Sagehens were led by Smith who earned her first hat-trick of the season with three goals in the loss.
Brienz Lang and
Abigail Wiesenthal had two each while Stigar,
Gabby Lewis, Jachung, and
Lulu Gaither had one.
A big first half from Wagner made the difference in the game after they opened the game with back-to-back quarters with four goals. The Sagehens opened the game with a goal by Lang and took a 2-1 lead after another by Smith, but Wagner went on a 4-0 run to take a 5-2 lead. Smith and Stigar got the Sagehens back into striking distance, but Wagner ended the first half with the final two goals to take an 8-5 lead into halftime.
Lang and Wiesenthal scored for the Sagehens in the third but Wagner matched Pomona-Pitzer with two of their own to head into the fourth with Wagner up 10-7.
Wagner netted the first two goals of the fourth quarter to take a 12-7 lead before the Sagehens came back with three-straight goals from Wisenthal, Smith, and Lewis to make it interesting at 12-10 with 2:49 remaining. Despite making a threat of a comeback, Wagner answered with a goal to prevent any comeback attempt by the Sagehens to end the Bruno Classic.
