Sagehens Fall To No. 2 Hawaii At Barbara Kalbus

IRVINE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team fell in their opening game of the Barbara Kalbus Tournament to No. 2 Hawaii 18-4 on Friday afternoon at the Anteater Aquatics Center.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 3-4 overall on the season.

The Sagehens had four different goal scorers in the loss to Hawaii as Abigail Wiesenthal, Ayva Magna, Gabby Lewis and Lauren Smith all found the back of the net in the Sagehens opening game.

Pomona-Pitzer stayed with Hawaii early in the game and scored the first goal of the day as Wiesenthal netted a goal in the opening minute to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead. Hawaii came back with a 4-0 run until Lewis scored the second goal of the quarter for the Sagehens to cut into the lead at 4-2. Hawaii ended the first with a goal as well, but the Sagehens hung into the game with a 5-2 deficit.

The game started to slip away from the Sagehens as Hawaii started the second quarter with a 5-0 run before Smith netted the first and only goal of the second quarter with the Sagehens down 11-3 at the break.

Pomona-Pitzer's defense allowed less goals in the second half against Hawaii with only three surrendered in the third and four in the fourth, but the offense stalled out against the Division I powerhouse with just one goal in the fourth as the Sagehens dropped their first game of the Barbara Kalbus Tournament.

Up Next: The Sagehens will continue the Barbara Kalbus Tournament on Saturday against the loser of Arizona State and Long Beach State at 3:45 p.n. at UC Irvine.
