Sagehens Take Wins Over SCIAC Opponents Cal Lutheran And Occidental

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team came away with a pair of SCIAC wins as they traveled to Occidental for an 8-1 win and returned home for a 9-0 win over Cal Lutheran on Saturday afternoon.
 
Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens move to 4-1 overall to start the year.

The Sagehens started out the day with a trip to Los Angeles for a match with the Occidental Tigers. Pomona-Pitzer started well with all three of the doubles points against the Tigers. The Closest of the three was played at No. 1 doubles as Angie Zhou and Nyakiriri Kanefu came away with an 8-4 victory.  Samantha Moore-Thomson and Alex Coleman earned an 8-2 win at the No. 2 position while Marissa Markey and Amelia Poor finished with a clean 8-0 win at the No. 3 spot.
 
After taking all three of the doubles points, the Sagehens almost came away with a clean sweep of singles play with five of the six matches going in their favor. Poor and Moore-Thomson had quick matches at No. 4 and No. 5 with 6-1, 6-0 wins while Lauren Rha came through with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 2 position.
 
Pomona-Pitzer then took wins at No. 1 and No. 3 as Kanefu took a 7-5, 6-2 win and Markey doubled up her wins against the Tigers with a 7-5, 6-2 win.

The Sagehens then returned home for another SCIAC contest against Cal Lutheran where they started off the match with all three doubles points against the Regals.
 
Another tight contest at No. 1 doubles as Zhou and Kanefu came out with an 8-7 win.  The Sagehens won more comfortably at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles as Markey and Poor won 8-2 and Rha and Coleman took an 8-3 win to take all three points heading into singles play.
 
Cal Lutheran did manage to force three sets at No. 1 singles, but Zhou came out on top with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 win.  Rha won at the No. 2 spot, 7-5, 6-1 and Markey followed at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
 
Poor won her match at No. 4 singles by the scores of 6-2, 6-3, Moore-Thomson won at No. 5 singles 6-4, 6-3 and Rachel Homan ended the day with a win at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-1.
 
Up Next: The Sagehens will next head to ITA Indoors on March 1st.
