CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer lacrosse team defended their home turf against the Colorado College Tigers with a 10-7 victory on Friday night. The Sagehens were led by
River Buechner who scored four goals while
Fiona Lewis earned a hat trick for the second-straight game.
Caroline Welch picked up three ground balls for the Sagehens while
Hannah Gough had two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Ruby Loesch ended the night with seven saves between the pipes. The Sagehens will be back in action on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. when they host Rhodes College.
How It Happened
The Sagehens controlled things from the opening whistle as
Taylor Glanville won the first draw control and scored just 39 seconds into the contest. The game remained at 1-0 until
Grace Warner found the back of the night with 3:34 remaining in the first quarter. The trio of
River Buechner,
Fiona Lewis, and
Sydney Landauer all scored one goal with under two minutes to play in the first quarter, giving the Sagehens a 5-0 lead. Lewis and Landauer scored just 13 seconds apart at the 16 second mark and three second mark to send the Sagehens into the second quarter with momentum on their side.
The Tigers came out shooting in the second quarter, scoring three unanswered goals before
Fiona Lewis could end the run, putting the Sagehens up 6-3. The Tigers were able to score once more before the half to cut the Sagehen lead to 6-4. After the halftime break,
River Buechner scored the first goal of the third quarter with 7:11 to play in the quarter but another 3-0 lead from the Tigers tied the game at 7-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Sagehens were able to stifle the Tigers attack, shutting them out of the fourth quarter while tallying three goals of their own.
River Buechner scored just over two minutes into the fourth to put the Sagehens back on top at 8-7.
Fiona Lewis recorded her third goal of the game just minutes later to make it 9-7. Buechner was able to put the finishing touches on the game with 3:10 to play in the fourth, scoring her fourth goal to seal the Sagehens 10-7 victory.
