LOS ANGELES, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer lacrosse team earned a 17-4 victory over the Occidental Tigers to open the 2024 season. The Sagehens led from start to finish with
Grace Warner leading the team with four goals off five shots while
Fiona Lewis also recording a hat trick with three goals in the contest. Lewis also earned one ground ball and had two caused turnovers with one assist.
Hannah Gough,
Shoshi Henderson, and
Sydney Landauer all recorded two goals each while Henderson led the team in points overall, dishing out three assists.
Chloe Denhart,
Taylor Glanville,
Ella Bradley, and
River Buechner each recorded one goal in the victory.
Ruby Loesch faced 15 shots in the contest, making nine saves with just four goals allowed. The Sagehens will be back in on Friday, Feb. 23 when they host the Colorado College Tigers at 7:00 p.m.
How It Happened
The Tigers won the opening draw control and recorded the game's first shot less than a minute into the contest, but the Sagehens struck first with a goal from
Fiona Lewis with 12:52 left in the first quarter.
Shoshi Henderson and
Grace Warner both found the back of the net less than two minutes after Lewis, increasing the Sagehens lead to 3-0 with 10:58 to play in the opening quarter.
Grace Warner earned the young season's first hat trick, scoring with 7:59 on the clock and again with 5:19 remaining in the first quarter to increase the lead to 5-0. Pomona-Pitzer closed out the quarter with another goal from
Fiona Lewis and a goal from
Sydney Landauer, putting the Sagehens up 7-0 to end the first quarter.
The Sagehens continued to control the pace of the game out of the break as Henderson struck the net for the second time of the day 1:28 into the second quarter to make it 8-0.
Grace Warner added her fourth goal of the day to make it 9-0 before
River Buechner found the net for her first goal of the season to give the Sagehens a 10-0 lead. The Tigers managed to score off a free position shot with 2:46 left in the second quarter but
Hannah Gough scored back to back goals to put the Sagehens up 12-1 heading into the halftime break.
Pomona-Pitzer slowed things down in the third quarter, scoring three goals while allowing one with
Chloe Denhart picking up her first career goal while
Sydney Landauer and
Ella Bradley chimed in to make it 15-1 before the Tigers answered with their second goal of the game to make it 15-2 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter,
Fiona Lewis scored to make it 16-2 to become the second Sagehen in the game with a hat trick. Occidental was able to score two goals of their own to cut the Sagehen lead to 16-4. With 1:37 remaining,
Hannah Gough found an open
Taylor Glanville who slotted it past the keeper to put the finishing touches on a 17-4 victory in the Sagehens season opener.
