CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team picked up their first win of the 2024 season with a 5-0 shutout over the Whitworth Pirates as they split the doubleheader, dropping game two 4-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Sagehens recorded 10 hits in game one with
Devin Waddell and
Morgan Groves both earning two hits while
Emily Hurtado and
Natalie Murguia both earned two-RBIs. Waddell pitched a complete game shutout for Pomona-Pitzer, allowing just one run, facing 23 batters. The Sagehens recorded 10 hits in game two as well but only scored two runs to the Pirates four to close out Saturday's action. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Feb. 24 when they host Hope International for a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Pomona-Pitzer 5, Whitworth 0
Devin Waddell sat three batters to start game one with the Pirates recording three groundouts. The Sagehens grounded out twice to start the bottom of the first but loaded the bases with three singles off the bats of
Brooke Bullis, Waddell, and
Bella Carreon but all three were left stranded after an infield pop-up ended the inning. After a scoreless second inning, the Sagehens got to work in the third inning with
Lauren Ziment earning a walk before advancing to second with a single from Waddell. Both runners moved over to third and second after a pass ball. Pomona-Pitzer was able to score both runners with a two-out, two-RBI single from
Emily Hurtado to take a 2-0 lead.
The Sagehens added to their lead later in the fifth inning after an RBI single from
Claire Sefkow brought
Bella Carreon home to make it 3-0.
Morgan Groves singled through the left side to put two runners on.
Natalie Murguia later recorded a two-RBI double to center field to increase the Sagehens lead to 5-0.
Devin Waddell managed to escape a dangerous opportunity from the Pirates. Whitworth capitalized on a walk and later advanced to second on a groundout and third on a passed ball. Another walk put runners on first and third with Whitworth stealing second to put two runners in scoring position with two outs. Waddell was able to force her 11th groundout of the day to end the inning. In the top of the seventh, Waddell faced three batters, going down in order with a pop up, line out, and ground out to seal the Sagehens 5-0 victory.
Pomona-Pitzer 2, Whitworth 4
Pomona-Pitzer got into a bit of early trouble in game two as the Pirates started the game with a double down the left field line before hitting a two-run home run off the scoreboard in left field. Whitworth added one more run in the first inning after an RBI walk to make it 3-0. The Sagehens tried to answer quickly in the bottom of the first as Murguia, Bullis, and Hurtado all singled to load the bases but the Pirates managed to work out of the inning. The Sagehens cut the deficit to 3-2 in the second inning as Murguia hit a two-RBI double to bring in
Lauren Ziment and
Bella Carreon.
Whitworth was able to expand their lead to 4-2 in the top of the fourth with a solo home run. The Sagehens couldn't find their groove down the stretch, recording just two more hits in the contest as the Pirates took game two 4-2.
