CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team came away with their biggest win of the season with a 67-54 win over SCIAC rival CMS on Saturday, February 10
th at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 5-18 overall and 2-12 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Emily Lee who had a game-high 22 points.
Abigail Homan tallied her first career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds while
Katie Drais had 10 and
Jadyn Lee with nine in the win.
The Sagehens shot exceptionally well from three at 57.1% and hit on 45.8% from the field. The Sagehens also held a slight advantage on the boards at 25-24, but CMS controlled the paint scoring 32 points down low while the Sagehens only had 18.
CMS started out with the early lead in the first quarter at 6-2 and extended it to 14-9 with 2:30 to play in the opening quarter. The Sagehens kept it close midway through the first, but CMS and the first strong and took a 19-12 lead into the second.
The Sagehens started to chip away at the lead and closed the gap to 23-20 after a pair of made free throws by
Emily Lee. CMS tried to extend the lead by Drais kept the Sagehens close with her three-point shooting as Pomona-Pitzer trailed by one at 29-28 with 1:22 to go until halftime. CMS was aided by some questionable calls in the final few minutes of the first half that allowed them to take a 34-28 lead heading into halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer completely flipped the script in the second half and dominated CMS in the third and fourth quarters. CMS took a 37-28 lead early in the third and then the Sagehens went on an 11-0 run led by eight points from Homan to take their first lead of the game at 39-37 with just four minutes gone in the third. The two teams alternated leads in the final few minutes of the third, but the Sagehens took the lead at the end after a three by
Emily Lee to take a 47-46 advantage into the fourth.
The Sagehens kept their good offense rolling in the fourth quarter with their best scoring quarter of the game outscoring CMS 20-8. Pomona-Pitzer started with an 11-4 run to take a 61-50 lead midway through the fourth and a dagger three-pointer by Homan put the Sagehens up 64-51 to take the air out of any CMS comeback.
Pomona-Pitzer finished the Athenas off in the fourth quarter to take their largest margin of victory for the season at home against their rivals in their final home game of the season.
