Sagehens Drop Doubleheader to Vanguard Lions on Opening Day

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team dropped a doubleheader to the Vanguard Lions, falling in game one 2-0 and 5-1 in game two. The Sagehens will be back in action on Feb. 16 when they host the Whitworth Pirates at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The Sagehens recorded seven hits in the 2-0 loss against the Lions with Brooke Bullis going 3-3 at the plate while Devin Waddell, Clarie Sefkow, Marie Milton, and Natalie Murguia all recorded one hit with Wadddell and Bullis both hitting a double in the contest. Defensively, the Sagehens recorded three double plays but allowed a run in the fourth and sixth inning which would hold through to the full seven innings as Vanguard earned a 2-0 win.
 
Devin Waddell started the game but only pitched one inning due to an injury. Erika Rivera pitched 4.1 innings, allowing six hits and two runs while facing 19 batters. Nyla Spring pitched 1.2 innings to close out the game, allowing one hit in five batters faced.

The Lions struck first in game two, scoring off an RBI single to right field in the first before later scoring three more runs with an RBI groundout and two RBI singles to take a 4-0 lead. The Sagehens responded in the third after Kylie Lie doubled to center to start the inning. Liu advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored after a ground out to short stop brought Liu in to cut the Lions lead to 4-1. The Sagehens couldn't get the offense going as they only recorded one more hit in the contest with Vanguard scoring once more in the seventh to earn a 5-1 victory. 
 
Nyla Springer pitched 1.2 innings, allowing six hits and four runs before Madison Hadley came in, pitching 4.2 innings with five hits and one run allowed while facing 18 batters.
