Cookson And Bergman Lead Charge As Sagehens Dominate Stags At Home

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team got back in the SCIAC Title race with a 70-54 win against SCIAC rival CMS on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 17-5 overall and 10-3 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Ty Bergman with a team-high 16 points in the win. Joe Cookson earned his sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 boards while Jasper Hedin had 13 and Peyton Mullarkey with 10.

Pomona-Pitzer shot over 50% from both the field and from three in what was an impressive offensive night for the Sagehens in the home leg of the Sixth Street Rivalry. The Sagehens shot at 50.9% from the field and 50% from three hitting on 10-20 from beyond the arc.  The Sagehens also outrebounded CMS 30-24, outscored the Stags in the paint 28-12, and had 11 second-chance points to CMS's two.

The Sagehens were cooking from three to start the game with three of their first four shots hitting from beyond the arc to take an 11-6 lead to start the first half. After a hot start by both offenses, the game slowed down during the middle of the first half, but the Sagehens kept their lead over CMS up 25-22 with 6:25 until halftime. CMS cut it down to a one-point deficit at 30-29 with 3:28 to play in the first half, but the Sagehens hit a three by Mullarkey to end the first half on a high note with a 35-30 lead heading into the locker room.

Pomona-Pitzer exploded out of the gate to start the second half and went on a 10-0 run without missing a shot to take a 45-30 lead with 16:29 left to go. CMS responded and started to chip away at the big Sagehen lead to get it back under 10 at 49-40, but the Sagehens turned on the gas again and sparked a 9-3 run to go up 18 with a 58-40 lead under 10 minutes to play.

The Sagehens had the game wrapped up with eight minutes to play in the second half and capped the game off with a Hedin dunk as Pomona-Pitzer took the home Sixth Street Rivalry with a statement win over CMS.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next host SCIAC opponent Occidental on Wednesday, February 14th at 7:00 p.m.
