Sagehens Erase 17-Point Deficit, Defeat Cal Lutheran 64-61

CLAREMONT, Calif. — After facing a 17-point second-quarter deficit, Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball came back to defeat Cal Lutheran 64-61 Wednesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
 
Season Impact: The win improves the Sagehens' record to 6-2 on the season, including 2-0 in SCIAC play. 
 
Abigail Homan led Pomona-Pitzer with a game-high 22 points, tying her career high. She also tallied seven rebounds, two blocks, a steal and an assist. Jadyn Lee notched 20 points to go with seven rebounds, three steals and three blocks, while Charlotte Patel posted seven points, nine rebounds and four steals. 
 
The Regals jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game before Jadyn Lee scored a driving layup to put the Sagehens on the board. But Cal Lutheran continued to build its lead, ending the first quarter with a 19-7 advantage. The Regals continued to surge, taking its largest lead of the game, 31-14, with 3:31 to go in the second quarter. 
 
But Pomona-Pitzer refused to quit, with Homan and Jadyn Lee trading baskets to end the half. The Sagehens trailed 31-18 at the break. 
 
Homan and Emily Lee traded triples at the start of the third quarter, cutting the Regals' lead to seven, 31-24. Homan scored another pair of baskets in the paint and Jadyn Lee added a driving layup as Cal Lutheran led 40-30 with 3:56 left in the third. Jadyn Lee and Shea Joko each hit jumpers as the Sagehens trailed 41-36 heading into the fourth. 
 
Patel scored a driving layup and found Jadyn Lee for another basket in the paint to cut Pomona-Pitzer's deficit to two, 43-41. Homan nailed another triple before Jadyn Lee scored another pair of baskets to tie the game, 48-48, with 6:14 to go. 
 
Both teams struggled to score over the ensuing few minutes, but Jadyn lee knocked down a pair from the free throw line to give the Sagehens their first lead of the game, 54-53, with 2:56 left. Charlize Andaya added one from the line before Jadyn Lee knocked down another pair of free throws. Homan then got a driving layup to fall, putting Pomona-Pitzer up five, 59-54, with 1:13 left. 
 
After the Regals managed to cut their deficit to two, 63-61, with four seconds left, Patel added another free throw to put the Sagehens back up three, 64-61. Cal Lutheran's last-second heave from half court was blocked by Andaya, as Pomona-Pitzer came away with the 64-61 win. 
 
Up Next: The Sagehens return to the court on Sunday, Dec. 29, when they host Emmanuel College at 5:00 p.m. PT.
