CLAREMONT, Calif. — Sara Chicco and
Emily Lee each scored 20 points to lead Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball to a 68-57 win over Wheaton College Tuesday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: The win improves the Sagehens' record to 7-3 on the season, including 2-0 in SCIAC play.
Chicco reached 20 points for the second time this season, going 7-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-11 from three-point range.
Emily Lee posted her third 20-point game of the season, shooting 5-of-13 while adding four rebounds and a pair of steals.
Abigail Homan added 12 points and five boards for Pomona-Pitzer.
The Sagehens trailed 12-6 early, but a
Shea Joko lay-in and a
Kellie Au three-pointer just before the first quarter buzzer tied the game at 12-12. Pomona-Pitzer kept its foot on the gas, as a Chicco trey capped an 8-0 run at the start of the second quarter and gave the team a 20-12 lead.
Emily Lee knocked down a three of her own and Homan scored a pair of baskets in the paint as the Sagehens led 29-24 at the half.
Pomona-Pitzer pushed its lead to 14, 40-26, midway through the third quarter following another Chicco triple and a Homan lay up. Chicco hit another three, Homan made another trio of baskets in the paint, and
Jadyn Lee scored a driving lay-in to make it 49-31 Sagehens.
Leading 51-38 at the start of the fourth quarter, Chicco nailed another three off a
Kayla Malek assist and
Emily Lee scored a driving layup to extend Pomona-Pitzer's lead, 58-40. The Saints cut their deficit to single digits, 53-61, with 5:17 left in the game. But baskets from Emily and
Jadyn Lee and Chicco held off Wheaton, as the Sagehens went on to seal the 68-57 win.
