CLAREMONT, CA. – The Sagehens' women's soccer team fell to the Athenas with a score of 1-0 Saturday afternoon in the SCIAC Tournament championship game.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens move on with a record of 15-2-2 overall.
The Sagehens ended with 12 shots with four shots on goal while the Poets ended with seven shots and four shots on goal.
The No. 1 seed Sagehens took on cross-street rival and No. 3 seed CMS in the SCIAC Tournament championship game. The first half of the match was hard-fought with neither team finding the back of the net but both displaying tough defense. The Athenas maintained possession for the majority of the first half, putting up 11 shots while the Sagehens had four.
Spencer Deutz had two of the four shots on goal in the 28th and 26th minutes, both saved by the CMS goalkeeper. Hannah Hong had a shot as well in the 25th minute. On the defensive end, Sagehens goalkeeper Patricia DePalma made five saves. DePalma's strong goalkeeping performance kept the Sagehens in the game, stopping the Athena's advances multiple times.
CMS broke through in the 49th minute, when the Athenas' Emma Fogg found the back of the net off a free kick assist. Despite out-shooting CMS 5-4 in the second half, the Sagehens couldn't quite capitalize on their scoring opportunities. Rojas Collins, Ella Adams and Maxine Davey each had shots in the final 15 minutes, but the Athenas held on for the 1-0 win to clinch the SCIAC Tournament championship.
