Sagehens Move Past UCSC in PKs, Advance to NCAA Second Round

CLAREMONT, CALIF. — Pomona-Pitzer women's soccer outlasted UC Santa Cruz in a thrilling NCAA First Round matchup Saturday, moving past UC Santa Cruz in penalty kicks 5-4 following a 0-0 stalemate in regulation and overtime. 
 
With the win, the Sagehens advance to the NCAA Second Round where they will face Trinity University tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 17 at 1:00 p.m. PT. 
 
Despite out-shooting the Banana Slugs 28-9, including 11-5 on target, Pomona-Pitzer couldn't quite capitalize on its scoring opportunities. The Sagehens saw multiple shot attempts hit the post in the second half and overtime. Pomona-Pitzer also earned seven corner kicks to UCSC's two. 
 
The Sagehens dominated possession early, with Ella Endo, Brooke Bailey, Spencer Deutz and Vivian Rojas Collins tallying shots in the first 22 minutes. Hannah Hong's attempt in the 26th minute was saved as the match remained scoreless at the half. 
 
Melanie Ng saw a promising shot attempt off a corner kick saved in the 63rd minute, before Isla Burch's shot attempt was also saved in the 65th. Rojas Collins fired off back-to-back shots in the 77th minute, with one being saved, but couldn't find the back of the net. Burch, Ng and Deutz all saw shots saved in the final minute before Hong hit the post in the 88th minute, keeping the match scoreless after 90 minutes. 
 
Pomona-Pitzer out-shot the Slugs 6-1 in the first overtime, with Rojas Collins seeing a shot attempt saved in the 94th minute. In the second overtime, the Sagehens out-shot UCSC 4-1 but couldn't quite convert, with Hong's last second attempt missing high, sending the match into a penalty kick shootout. 
 
Maxine Davey found the back of the net first for Pomona-Pitzer in the penalty kick shootout, tying the shootout 1-1. UCSC's ensuing attempt missed high, as Endo scored to put the Sagehens up 2-1. Neither team missed the rest of the way, as Rojas Collins fired the deciding shot into the net to give Pomona-Pitzer the 5-4 win in penalty kicks. 
 
The Sagehens will face Trinity University tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 17 at 1:00 p.m. PT, in the NCAA Second Round.
