CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team earned their fourth-straight win with a 32-27 win over Cal Lutheran on Saturday night at Merritt Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in SCIAC play. The Sagehens have also clinched the Sun Division Title and will advance to the SCIAC Championship game against the winner of the Surf Division for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Grady Russo led the air attack with 133 yards and a touchdown while also leading the ground attack with 65 yards and a touchdown as well.
Quinten Wimmer led the team with 64 yards and a touchdown as well on the receiving end.
The defense and special teams shined for Pomona-Pitzer has the punt defense had a blocked punt and stopped a fake punt attempt to give the offense great field position.
Thomas McConnell had a game to remember after he led the team with 12 tackles and a pick-six for 65 yards.
David Gorman had nine tackles while McConnell,
Alden Kling, and
Max Eastman all had sacks.
The Sagehens started out well with a touchdown on their opening drive as
Sander Wimmer punched in a four-yard run. Russo followed with a rushing touchdown early in the second quarter and then McConnell answered with a pick-six to make it 21-0 with 10:15 left in the second quarter.
Pomona-Pitzer went on and added a safety as well to extend their lead to the largest of the night at 23-0, but Cal Lutheran got a little momentum back with a score just before halftime to make it 23-7 at the break.
The Sagehens opened the second half scoring with a 32-yard field goal but the Kingsmen came back with a 58-yard touchdown pass to chip away at the lead.
The Sagehens came back with a touchdown pass to Wimmer but Cal Lutheran put together two scoring drives at the end of the fourth to make it a one-score game at 32-27.
The Sagehens special teams unit came up big again with a recovery of an onside kick to ice the game and propelled the Sagehens into the SCIAC Championship game for the second consecutive year.
