CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team earned a 61-53 win over Carleton College in game one of the David Wells Classic on Friday afternoon at Roberts Pavilion.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improved to 4-2 overall.
The Sagehens were led by freshman
Sara Chicco who netted a career-high 24 points off of the bench hitting on 6-14 threes.
Jadyn Lee was also past the 20-point mark with 21 while
Emily Lee had seven.
The Knights stayed with the Sagehens in the first quarter with Pomona-Pitzer holding a slight lead at 9-7 before back-to-back threes by Chicco and
Katie Drais to take a 15-11 lead into the second quarter.
The Sagehens extended their lead in the second to 13 with baskets by Chicco and Lee to hold a 27-14 lead before the Knights cut into the lead with a run to make it 27-23 with 1:27 left in the first half. The Sagehens got a few points back at the end of the half and took a 31-24 lead into the break.
Carleton got the game back down to a one-possession contest down 33-30 after a pair of made free throws, but the Sagehens kept the Knights away from tying the game with baskets from Chicco to push the lead back up to 10 at 43-33. The Sagehens kept their lead over Carleton and went into the fourth up 48-41.
The Knights closed the gap on the Sagehens early in the fourth down just three points at 48-45. The Sagehens did a good job not allowing Carleton to get within striking distance and extended their lead back out to 10 points with baskets from Lee and Chicco to go up 61-51 with 2:11 to play. Carleton got one basket back, but the Sagehens closed out the Knights in game one of the David Wells Classic.
