CLAREMONT, CA. — Pomona-Pitzer women's volleyball fell to La Verne in three sets (23-25, 17-25, 18-25) Saturday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Season Impact: The loss drops the Sagehens' record to 14-10 overall, including 9-5 in SCIAC play.

The Leopards jumped out to a 9-5 lead in set one before Kellan Hayes tallied a kill and Charlotte Sekerka posted a block for the Sagehens. La Verne maintained its lead throughout, until a Jenny Jenks solo stuff sealed a 4-0 Pomona-Pitzer run and tied things at 19-19. The Sagehens extended their lead to two, 23-21 after a Mountanos kill. But the Leopards finished strong, scoring the game's final four points to take set one, 25-23.

It was the Sagehens that got out to a quick start in the second set, as back-to-back kills from Gill and Hayes put Pomona-Pitzer up 5-3. A Samantha Grabb kill later made it 9-7 Sagehens. Teams then traded points, as another Gill kill put Pomona-Pitzer up 14-13. The Leopards, though, scored five straight to go up 18-13, going on to take set two, 25-17.

Set three remained close early, as Sekerka posted a block with Gill then recording a service ace to give the Sagehens a 14-13 advantage. Teams traded points, with a Hayes kill bringing Pomona-Pitzer within one, 18-17. But La Verne went on to win set three, 25-18, sealing the 3-0 match win.
