Sagehens Fall in PKs to Trinity in NCAA Second Round

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's soccer fell in penalty kicks (3-2) after remaining deadlocked 1-1 in regulation and overtime Sunday afternoon to Trinity University in the NCAA Second Round. The loss concludes the Sagehens' 2024 campaign.

Pomona-Pitzer dominated the shot count, out-shooting the Tigers 21-5 overall and 14-4 on target. The Sagehens also earned four corner kicks in the game to Trinity's one.

The score remained tied at 0-0 at the end of the first half, despite Pomona-Pitzer racking up six shots to the Tigers' two. Melanie Ng, Isla Burch, Imogen Jenkyn and Kendrick Dahlin each tallied shots on target in the first 45 minutes as the Sagehens couldn't quite convert.

Trinity took the lead in the 68th minute, as the Tigers' Madisyn Barganski found the back of the net on a free kick assist just outside of the box. Pomona-Pitzer, though, didn't wait long to respond as Ella Endo scored in the bottom right corner six minutes later off a double assist from Hannah Hong and Emily Chang. The match remained tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation despite a trio of shots on target from Eliana Prosnitz and Chang.

The Sagehens out-shot the Tigers 3-1 in the first overtime, with Imogen Jenkyn and Maxine Davey each seeing their shots saved. Neither team managed to fire off a shot in the second overtime, as the match remained tied 1-1.

In the ensuing penalty kick shootout, DePalma saved the Tigers' second attempt, with Hong then converting to put the Sagehens up 2-1. But Lexi Wong and Isla Burch both saw their following shots saved, and Spencer Deutz' final attempt hit the woodwork as Trinity came away with the 3-2 advantage in penalty kicks.
