CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's volleyball advanced to the SCIAC Tournament semifinals after defeating Chapman 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-21) Tuesday night in the conference tournament first round.
Season Impact: The win improves the Sagehens' record to 17-10 overall.
Chloe Gill led Pomona-Pitzer with a team-high 12 kills to go with three digs, while
Paige Mountanos had 11 kills on a .556 clip.
Samantha Grabb also had 11 kills to go with four blocks and three digs while
Jenny Jenks dished out 39 assists and three kills.
Teams traded points in the first set until a Gill kill and a
Mackenzie Bravo Woo service ace gave the Sagehens a 9-6 lead. Pomona-Pitzer later went on a 9-0 run with Jenks at the service line, as Mountanos recorded back-to-back kills to take a 20-10 advantage.
Kellan Hayes sealed the set one win, 25-15, with a kill.
The Sagehens got out to a 4-0 lead in the second set, with kills from Grabb, Gill and
Charlotte Sekerka. Grabb later highlighted a 5-0 run with a pair of kills to put Pomona-Pitzer up 10, 17-7. The Sagehens kept their foot on the gas, closing the set with a 5-0 run as a Mountanos kill gave Pomona-Pitzer the 25-13 set-two win.
Chapman came out quick in the third set, leading 4-2 early. But kills from Hayes, Sekerka and a Hayes ace fueled a 9-6 run to put Pomona-Pitzer up 11-8. The Panthers scored four straight later in the set, going up 19-18. A pair of kills from Hayes, though, gave the Sagehens back the lead, 21-20. Pomona-Pitzer scored the final four points of the match as a Mountanos kill sealed set three, 25-21, and the 3-0 match win for the Sagehens.
