CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team fell in the Sixth Street Rivalry to CMS 20-14 on Saturday night at Merritt Field.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens suffer their first SCIAC loss of the season and fall to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Nick Kim who got the start at QB and went for 19-34 for 170 and two touchdowns.
Brennan Dragomer led the rushing charge with nine carries for 40 yards while
Matthias Olson led all receivers with 118 yards off of six catches and a touchdown. Thomas McConnel led the defense with 14 total tackles and two tackles for a loss.
Pomona-Pitzer ended up losing the turnover battle against CMS after the Sagehen offense threw two interceptions while the Stags did not turn the ball over throughout the entire contest. Big plays were also CMS's key to victory and they did so early with a 34 yard pass to open the game with a touchdown on the opening drive to take an early 7-0 lead.
The Stags capitalized off of the Sagehens' early turnovers and went up two scores after they punched in a one-yard touchdown to cap off a nine-play drive to make it 14-0 in the first.
Pomona-Pitzer battled back as Olson got going on offense and ended a nine-play drive of their own with a two-yard catch to cut the lead down to 14-7.
The Stags came back with another big play just before halftime as they struck for an 85-yard pitch and catch to go up 20-7 just before halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer did a good job on defense in the second half to keep CMS from doing any more damage and got back into the game with a score from
Joaquin Valdez after a 90-yard drive to make it a one-score game at 20-14 heading into the fourth.
The Sagehens were in the process of a game-winning drive, but penalties costed them down the stretch as CMS was able to hang on and take the 2024 Sixth Street Rivalry game.
