Sagehens Kick Walk Off Win Over Redlands

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team got back on track with a 10-7 win over Sun Division opponent Redlands on Saturday night at Merritt Field.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Nick Kim led the passing attack for the Sagehens going 15-30 for 98 yards. Quinten Wimmer had 57 yards on the ground mostly through a wild cat offense while having 62 yards receiving off five catches.

The defense came up big for the Sagehens holding Redlands to just seven points and 244 yards of total offense. Thomas McConnell led the way with eight total tackles while George Cutting and Omaru Konneh each had a tackle for a loss. The big play of the game for the defense was a late interception by Joshua Yen that put the Sagehens in a prime position to get the win over Redlands in the fourth quarter.

Not a lot of offense between these two teams at Merritt Field but each team did score their only touchdown of the night in the first quarter.   The Bulldogs got the ball first and wasted no time putting together a touchdown drive after an 11-play drive was capped off by a 20-yard touchdown to take a quick 7-0 lead.

The Sagehens then forced a turnover late in the first quarter and came right back with a touchdown run by Sander Wimmer to end the first quarter tied at 7-7.

It was all defense from that point on as both teams struggled to move the ball into the red zone for the remainder of the game.  Fast-forwarding to the fourth quarter, the Sagehens had an opportunity to take a three-point lead, but a field goal was missed to give the ball back to the Bulldogs with a chance to make a drive for the win.   The Sagehen defense came up huge as Yen reacted to a tip ball and came away with an interception to set the Sagehens up for a huge opportunity to win the game late in the fourth quarter.   Kicker Jack Walker came through with a walk-off 15 yard field goal as the Sagehens earned a big win in the division in their quest to play for the SCIAC Championship.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next head to Chapman on Saturday, October 19th at 7:00 p.m.
