CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team jumped back into the race for the SCIAC Title with their 7-6 win over CMS in the Sixth Street Rivalry on Wednesday night at Axelrood Pool.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 15-10 overall and 6-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Miles Chiang and
Conrad Hugar who each shared a team-high two goals in the win while
Zach Whitfield,
Connor Sullivan, and
Chase Barman had one.
Liam Byrne had a great night in goal for Pomona-Pitzer after he recorded the win with 11 saves.
CMS had the advantage early after they jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first starting with back-to-back goals to open the game. Sullivan got the Sagehens on the board in the first but trailed 3-1 after the first eight minutes of play.
Pomona-Pitzer flipped the script in the second quarter as Hugar, Whitfield and Chiang all netted goals to take a 4-3 lead before the Stags ended the first half with a goal to make it 4-4 heading into halftime.
The duo of Chiang and Hugar started out strong again to start the second half with two goals to start the third to make it 6-4 to give the Sagehens their largest lead of the night. CMS cut it down to one goal to end the third with the Sagehens up 6-5 heading into the fourth.
Barman netted the first goal of the fourth to give the Sagehens a two-goal lead again at 7-5 and some incredible defense from the Sagehens shut out the Stags until their pulled one back with just nine second left to play. Despite making it a one-goal game, the Sagehens were able to run out the remainder of the clock and come away with the win on the road.
