SANTA CLARA, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team finished off the Julian Fraser Tournament with two wins after a 24-11 win over LIU and an 18-12 win over UC Merced on Sunday afternoon at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.
Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens improved to 14-10 overall.
Pomona-Pitzer 24, LIU 11
The Sagehens were led by
Darragh Flanders who netted four goals on the day.
Max Distaso and
Logan Colman each netted a hat-trick with three goals. John Schafer,
Conrad Hugar, and Andrew Plashchke had multigoal games with two while
Tommy Ryan, Stavros Zagrafos,
Alden Pfau,
Julian Montoya,
Nico Perna,
Dillon Joyce,
Indigo Lee and
Chase Barman had one each.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a strong start against LIU with 14 first half goals with seven goals in the first and second quarters. The Sharks stayed with the Sagehens early as Perna, Distaso, Hugar and Flanders kept the Sagehens on top 4-3. Pomona-Pitzer then went on a huge run with the final three goals of the first quarter and opened the second with the first six goals to take a 14-5 lead heading into halftime.
After building a big lead, the Sagehens still managed to put up five goals in the third and fourth quarters. Barman started the scoring in the second half while Colman, Joyce, Schafer and Flanders netted goals to end the third up 19-9.
The Sagehens scored five more goals in the fourth from Ryan, Pfau, Montoya, Zografos and Schafer to cruise to a big win in day two of the Julian Fraser Tournament.
Pomona-Pitzer 18, Merced 12
The Sagehens were led by
Miles Chiang who netted five goals in the win. Whitfield and Barman each netted hat-tricks as well with three each while Perna and
Theo Bass had two and Lee, Joyce, and Hugar, had one.
Merced got out to a lead over the Sagehens up 3-0 in the first before Chaing, Perna, and Hugar got the Sagehens even at 3-3. Perna netted his second of the day in the first but UC Merced held a 5-4 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Bobcats took a 7-4 lead to start the second before the Sagehens scored two goals from Whitfield and Distaso to end the first half to trail UC Merced 7-6 heading into halftime.
Chaing and Lee got the Sagehens their first lead of the game early in the third to make it 9-8 while Chiang and Barman scored late in the third to make it 11-9.
The Sagehens' offense got going in the fourth with goals from Distaso, Chiang, Barman, Whitfield and Joyce to close out strong for a 3-1 record at the Julian Fraser Tournament.
