Big First Half Moves Sagehens Past La Verne

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team defeated SCIAC Sun Division opponent La Verne 51-14 on Saturday night at Merritt Field.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by the return of quarterback Grady Russo who only played a half of football but still managed to record 263 yards with 5 touchdowns. Russo led the rushing attack as well with 48 yards while Quinten Wimmer had seven catches for 78 yards and a touchdown with brother Sander Wimmer getting two scores off 64 yards in the win.  The defense was huge again for the Sagehens in the win over the Leopards with two forced fumbles Gus Burns led the defense with seven tackles while Thomas McConnell had six.

Pomona-Pitzer offense was firing early and often as Russo connected with Matthias Olson for 49 yards on the Sagehens' first offensive possession to jump out to a 7-0 lead.  Russo went on to find two more long touchdown passes in the first quarter with a 42-yard pass to Quinten Wimmer and a 54-yard pass to Mitchell Rodenbaugh to make it 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Sagehens added three more touchdowns in the second quarter to build a massive first half lead over La Verne. Jack Susank broke a 14-yard run for a touchdown while Russo found Sander Wimmer for 10 yards to make it 34-0 with 1:02 remaining in the first half.

Pomona-Pitzer got the ball back late in the first half and then connected on a hail mary as Sander Wimmer went up and got a high deflection to pull in a 41-yard touchdown to go into halftime up 41-0.

After building a huge lead, the Sagehens started to rotate players in during the second half.  The Sagehens managed to add three more points on as Jack Walker kicked a 21-yard field goal and Noah Willingham scored his first career touchdown off of a five-yard pass from Gavin Mathan.

The Leopards managed to get two scores in the fourth quarter to put some points on the Sagehen defense, but the Sagehens rolled to a big win in their return to Merritt Field.

Up Next: The Sagehens will host their last home regular season contest as they host Cal Lutheran on Saturday, November 2nd at 7:00 p.m.
