CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team beat Caltech 3-1 on Friday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 13-7 overall and 8-2 in SCIAC play.
Sam Grabb led the way with 12 kills and Kylie Mies had 20 assists against the Beavers.
The Sagehens came out strong, taking the first set 25-18. Anna Krebs and Paige Mountanos led the offense, giving the Sagehens a comfortable mid-set lead at 14-10. Charlotte Sekerka had a huge block that helped push the score to 23-15. Despite a late surge from Caltech, Pomona-Pitzer clinched the set with a final kill from Mountanos.
The Sagehens took control early in the second set winning 25-19. Key kills from Chloe Gill and Kellan Hayes helped the Sagehens build a 20-13 lead. Caltech fought back with late kills, cutting the deficit to 23-19. However, a service error by Caltech followed by a kill from Gill secured the set for Pomona-Pitzer.
With early kills by Krebs, Grabb, and Hayes, the Sagehens established a solid lead in the third set. The Sagehens capitalized on Caltech's mistakes, ending the set 25-15 and winning the match with a 3 set sweep.
Hayes had a standout night and hit .800 while Grabb hit .600 with 12 kills, zero errors, and 20 attempts.
