LOS ANGELES, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team came away with a 3-1 win over SCIAC opponent Occidental on Tuesday night at Rush Gymnasium.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improved to 12-7 overall and 7-2 in SCIAC play.
Leading the way for the Sagehens was
Chloe Gill who tallied 10 kills and became the first Sagehen in the Rally Score Era to reach 1,000 Career Kills.
Kellan Hayes and
Paige Mountanos each had nine kills in the win while
Savanna Cespedes led the team with 18 assists and
Corrina Benson with 10 digs.
Pomona-Pitzer dominated the stats against the Tigers hitting .297 to Oxy's 0.46. The Sagehens were in an early battle with Occidental in the first set holding a one-point lead early at 11-10. The Sagehens Widened the gap with a 16-11 lead and spread that to 23-14. Occidental made a late run to cut it down to 24-19, but the Sagehens finished off the set with an attack error by Oxy to take set one 25-19.
Set two was a big offensive set for the Sagehens in their second largest margin of victory on the night. The Tigers stayed with the Sagehens at 5-5 early, but seven-straight points opened the set at 12-5 and eventually grew to a 25-13 win to take a 2-0 lead.
The Tigers did manage to steal a set away from Pomona-Pitzer after they stayed in the fight in the third set with both teams staying within a few points from one another. The Sagehens held a late 21-20 lead, but Occidental rallied with the final five points to take the third set at 25-21.
After dropping a set, the Sagehens got back to their winning ways and dominated the fourth set against the Tigers. The Sagehens took a 9-4 lead and then took 9 of the next 10 points for a 19-8 lead. After taking such a large lead, the Sagehens were able to close out the match with a 25-12 win to claim their seventh SCIAC win of the season.
