ORANGE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team went into Chapman and came away with a big 21-17 victory over the Panthers on Saturday night at Ernie Chapman Stadium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in SCIAC play.
Defense and Special Teams was the recipe for the Sagehens in their upset win over Chapman after holding Chapman to just 17 points, their lowest offensive total of the season, and blocking two punts against, one leading to a touchdown.
Sander Wimmer led the Sagehens' air attack with just one throw for 75 yards and a touchdown.
Nick Kim went 9-15 with 54 yards and a touchdown as the starting quarterback.
Carson Green led the rushing attack with 16 yards off 2 carries with
Quinten Wimmer getting 15 yards off of four carries.
Matthias Olson led the receiving core with one catch for 75 yards and a touchdown in the win while
Mitchell Rodenbaugh had 28 yards off four catches and a score as well.
Thomas McConnell led the defense with 14 total tackles while
David Gorman also had double digit tackles with 12 and a tackle for a loss. The Sagehens also had two interceptions as
Kalani Pickett and
Charlie Russo earned takeaways for the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer got the scoring going with some trickery towards the end of the first quarter after a double pass by the Wimmer family ended with Sander finding
Matthias Olson before the Chapman defense for a 75-yard touchdown strike to take a 7-0 lead.
Chapman got their first touchdown in the second quarter after a 23-yard pass after a 13-play drive evened the score at 7-7 with 8:12 left to play until halftime.
The Sagehen special teams unit then came up with a huge blocked punt and fell into the arms of
Joshua Yen who walked into the endzone to put the Sagehens up 14-7 heading into halftime.
The Panthers got even again midway through the third off of another big pass play from 37 yards to make it 14-14 and then came back to take their first lead of the game at 17-14 to start the fourth quarter after stalling out on the goal line thanks to a huge stand by the Sagehens' defense
After trailing for the first time in the contest, the Sagehens came down and answered with a 21-yard pass from Kim to Rodenbaugh to go up 21-17 with 9:50 to go in the fourth.
Pomona-Pitzer's defense came up huge again after Pickett turned the Chapman offense away with an interception and then after keeping the ball back late in the game, the Sagehens stopped the offense short of the line to gain and came away with a huge win on the road against Chapman.
