CLAREMONT, CA. — Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo defeated Whittier, 15-11, and Golden West College, 12-11, Saturday afternoon at Haldeman Pool. The wins improve the Sagehens' record to 10-9 on the season, including 4-1 in SCIAC play.
Sagehens 15, Whittier 11
Logan Colman paced Pomona-Pitzer with four goals against the Poets, while
Chase Barman added three scores and a pair of assists. Lyam Byrne notched 14 saves in the match.
Indigo Lee got things started for the Sagehens, finding the back of the cage off an assist from
Miles Chiang four minutes into the match. Colman scored back-to-back goals to put Pomona-Pitzer up 3-1 at the end of the first. Barman,
Conrad Hugar and Colman each scored in the second period as the Sagehens led 6-4 at the half.
Pomona-Pitzer extended its lead to six, 10-4, following a pair of
Zach Whitfield goals and one score apiece from Hugar and Colman. Barman scored back-to-back goals late in the third off assists from
Andrew Plaschke and Whitfield as the Sagehens led 13-7 heading into the final period.
The Poets scored four in the final period but never threatened, as
Max Distaso and
Darragh Flanders each found the back of the net to seal the 15-11 Sagehens win.
Sagehens 12, Golden West 11
Both teams kept the score close from the get-go, as goals from Hugar and
Indigo Lee tied things up at 2-2. Barman scored from the five-meter spot and Colman found the back of the cage on a power play to extend Pomona-Pitzer's lead to two, 5-3. Neither team could find separation, as
Alden Pfau and
Nico Perna each scored on power plays to tie the game at 8-8 at the break.
Teams continued to trade goals in the third period, with Pfau and Lee scoring in the third period to give the Sagehens a slim 10-9 advantage heading into the fourth. Golden West tied the match at 10-10 and again at 11-11, but Lee scored off an assist from
Tommy Ryan with 1:55 remaining that proved to be the deciding score. Pomona-Pitzer came away with the 12-11 victory.
Lee led the Sagehens against Golden West with three scores, while Perna, Barman and Pfau each scored a pair.
Liam Byrne recorded six saves in goal for Pomona-Pitzer.
