CLAREMONT, CA. -- The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to SCIAC opponent Whittier College 68-53 on Wednesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 3-16 overall and 0-10 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by the duo of
Emily Lee and
Jadyn Lee who were both in double figures in the loss.
Emily Lee led the team with 15 points while
Jadyn Lee added 14 points and eight rebounds.
Abigail Homan chipped in with nine while
Katie Drais came off the bench for eight.
Whittier won the field goal percentage battle in tonight's game after the Poets shot over 50% at 52.1% and was 8-14 from three for 57.1%. The Sagehens shot 35.12% from the floor and 28.6% from three. The Poets outrebounded the Sagehens 34-25, but the Sagehens won the turnover battle 12-10 and outscored the poets in the paint 22-18.
Pomona-Pitzer kept it close with the Poets in the first quarter with Whittier holding an 8-6 lead midway through the first quarter. The Sagehens got back even with the Poets at 11-11 after a blow-by basket by Drais while the teams continued to exchange baskets late in the first quarter. Pomona-Pitzer netted a late free-throw and took a 17-16 lead heading into the second quarter.
Whittier and Pomona-Pitzer came out exchanging three-pointers to start the second quarter, but Whittier reclaimed the lead at 22-20 and held that score while the two offenses cooled off early in the second quarter. The lead changed hands seven times in the second quarter, but the Poets were able to hang on to their late lead and headed into halftime up 32-29.
Whittier took over the lead to start the second half and took control of the game with a 9-2 run out of halftime. The Sagehens stopped the run with a three by
Emily Lee to get back under 10 at 43-34, but a big third quarter by the Poets gave them a 48-38 lead going into the fourth.
Whittier scored the first basket of the fourth before the Sagehens went on an 11-6 run to get back to within striking distance of the lead at 56-49 with five minutes left in the game. Despite making a run at a fourth-quarter comeback, the Poets strung together some possessions late and put away the Sagehens to hand them the loss at home.
