WHITTIER, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens bounced back from their road SCIAC loss at CMS with a big 93-79 win over SCIAC opponent Whittier on Wednesday night at Dave Jacobs Court.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 14-4 overall and 7-2 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Joe Cookson who had his eighth 20+ point game of the season with 23 in the win.
Pete Boyle netted a season-high 19 points,
Jasper Hedin with 17, and
Ty Bergman with his 7
th double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 boards.
The Sagehens shot at a 53.7% clip from the field and 34.3% from beyond the arc. Despite the lopsided victory, the Poets also shot very well in the game to keep it close after they shot for 47.4% from the floor and 45.8% from beyond the arc. The Sagehens also controlled the boards outrebounding Whittier 44-20 and had 28 second chance points to Whittier's 5.
A good start on the road for the Sagehens with an 11-2 run to open up the game that stretched to an 18-3 lead with 13:44 left in the first half. Whittier started to chip away at the lead late in the half and got it down to 10 points at 43-33 heading into halftime, but the big first-half lead for the Sagehens gave them a big advantage heading into the second half.
Pomona-Pitzer went up big to start the second half with an 18-point lead after a Cookson layup made it 53-35 with just three minutes gone in the second half. The Poets then started to heat up from the field and went on an 11-0 run to climb right back into the game down 53-46 with 15:02 to play. The lead got down to as little as four points for the Sagehens at 64-60, but the Sagehens regrouped with a 13-2 run to stretch the lead to 77-62 with just under five minutes to play.
After surviving the comeback attempt by the Poets, the Sagehens poured on the offense late and went up by 20 points with a 91-71 lead as they closed out their second-highest scoring night of the season with 93 points.
