CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to SCIAC opponent Occidental 85-65 on Wednesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 3-14 overall and 0-8 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by the trio of
Emily Lee,
Abigail Homan and
Jadyn Lee.
Emily Lee led the way with a team-high 19 points while Homan and
Jadyn Lee each chipped in with 18.
Pomona-Pitzer shot over 40% from the field at 42.1% and hit on 28.6% of their shots from beyond the arc but struggled against the big lineup of Occidental getting outrebounded 40-25 and allowing 40 points in the paint. The Sagehens also turned the ball over 14 times allowing 19 points off turnovers.
Occidental did all of its damage inside the paint and took a 13-8 lead in the first quarter. The Sagehens responded with a solid quarter from
Jadyn Lee after she scored 13 of the Sagehens' 24 points, but Ainsley Shelsta put up 11 points for Occidental in the first quarter as they held a 24-20 lead heading into the second.
Oxy stretched its lead in the second quarter as the offensive production slowed down a bit for the Sagehens. The Tigers took a 10-point lead at 33-23 and then went on an 11-4 run to end the first half to put the Sagehens in a 43-27 hole heading into the break.
The Sagehens' offense picked up again in the third with 15 points in the quarter, but the Tigers still controlled the paint and scored 21 points in the third to take a 64-42 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Sagehens' offense ended the night on a high note after they outscored the Tigers 23-21 in the fourth. Pomona-Pitzer offense shot at 47.3% from the floor in the fourth quarter but couldn't overcome the big early deficit as the Sagehens fell to the Tigers at home.
